Erich Neumann

My scholarly and theoretical work is deeply engaged with the writings of Erich Neumann. My doctoral research developed into a comprehensive articulation of his theory as a developmental, relational, and metapsychological framework. I continue to teach, write, and develop his ideas in relation to Jungian psychology and clinical practice.

Erich Neumann and me

My journey with Erich Neumann's writings began in 2014. During the first five years, I was repulsed by his poetic and repetitive style. During the following five years, I fell completely in love with his poetic, creative, challenging, transcendent, and mind-blowing ideas. What began as an attempt to use a small part of his writings in my planned dissertation research turned into an in-depth doctoral study of the full body of Erich Neumann's writings and its crystallization into an articulation of the developmental theory emerging from these writings. My current theoretical and therapeutic work is rooted in Neumann's ideas. I see myself as walking the path he paved, teaching his theory of early life as well as its zenith around the world, and my dissertation has since been published as a book, including in a Chinese edition. Neumann’s formulations and descriptions of psychological development, including his understanding of differences between men and women, and his theoretical framework, which elaborates and amplifies Jung’s theory, serve as my guiding map in working with patients of all ages, and especially with mothers and infants. Time and again, I am amazed and excited to discover how extremely accurate Neumann’s theory is in relation to the lived experience of the mother and infant in their dyadic intimacy. I am also amplifying Neumann’s theory by suggesting a description of the mother’s psychology within the dyad with her baby. This understanding supports my work with women after birth and in cases of postnatal depression. From the many words I have written about Erich Neumann, I present here the final words summarizing my doctoral dissertation: When I started my research, I thought I would cover only the part of Neumann’s theory that describes early-life development. Soon, I was completely hooked and wanted to read and understand more. The more I researched and came to realize the extent of Neumann’s theory, the more I found myself thinking about therapy in terms of his formulations. I was astonished both by the potential of the theory to deepen our psychological understanding of the therapeutic process and by the neglect of his writings in the contemporary Jungian world. Of course, there are many Jungian writers; nevertheless, Neumann’s work had the concrete potential to develop into a school of thought of its own, a “Neumannian” branch within Jungian psychology. Writing this dissertation was a long and lonely journey. Spending time in my study with Erich Neumann, I came to know him in a very intimate way, and although I have no idea of him as a person, I developed a strong sense of him as a theoretician and a deep appreciation for his work. I hope that this dissertation, now published as a book, will be a fresh breeze blowing on his old pages, a spring bloom for his theory, and the feminine spirit he so called for.
