Mother & Baby

IMG_9696_edited.jpg

The relationship between a mother and her baby is the most profound relationship in human life. It is this primal relationship through which the infant’s psychic structure develops and future psychic health and equilibrium are determined.
The first year of a baby’s life is a unique period of intimacy and closeness between mother and baby. It is also a time of profound transformation for the mother, as she finds her way into motherhood and discovers her own way of being with her baby.

The mother is the one with whom I work, but I listen closely to the baby. I listen not only with my ears, but with my intuition, my experience, and with a deep sensitivity to the baby’s way of communicating. This allows me to help the mother hear what her baby is experiencing, needing, or trying to convey without words, including what she may sometimes miss, and to strengthen her own innate ability to listen to her baby.

My understanding of this relationship is also deeply rooted in my own experience of motherhood. I have experienced the first year of life with each of my four children, and know from the inside the intimacy and closeness of being with a baby during this extraordinary period. This personal experience, together with my clinical and theoretical work with mothers and babies, has shaped the way I understand and accompany mothers and their babies.

My understanding of early life is also deeply rooted in my scholarly work on Erich Neumann’s theory of psychological development. My doctoral research and published book focus particularly on the earliest stages of life and the primal relationship between mother and baby. This theoretical perspective, together with my own experience of motherhood and my clinical work with mothers and babies, gives me a deep understanding of this relationship, both from the perspective of theory and from lived experience.

My work can begin even before pregnancy, for women who are trying to conceive, as well as during pregnancy, as they prepare for motherhood and for the relationship with their baby.
Even when, generally speaking, all is going well, motherhood is a profound and all-encompassing transition, and you do not have to carry it all alone. I offer a calm and supportive space where you can pause, lean back for a while, and have someone experienced hold the responsibility with you. Together, we can make sense of what you and your baby are experiencing, helping you feel more confident in yourself and more connected to your baby.

Sometimes, what a mother needs is simply someone who understands her and can make sense of what is happening to her and to her baby, someone who can give her the space to breathe and find her own way. This is the kind of help I offer, as you find your way into the new space of motherhood in your life.

Dr. Lidar Shany

Becoming a mother is a profound transformation, bringing with it a new relationship, new responsibilities, and a new way of experiencing yourself. I offer mothers a knowledgeable and supportive presence as they find their way through this transition and into their relationship with their baby.
